The UK Ministry of Defence has announced progress on Project NYX, an initiative aimed at developing autonomous drones capable of operating alongside Apache AH-64E attack helicopters.
The program, considered one of the British Army’s most important, seeks to create an unmanned aerial system that operates independently, conducting reconnaissance, target acquisition, and coordinated attacks, while also enhancing the effectiveness and safety of manned aircraft.
Scheduled to start in 2026, the project will last two years and be divided into prototyping and testing phases. Up to four companies will be selected to collaborate with the Ministry of Defence in creating a concept demonstrator to prove the technology’s feasibility. Development will involve integrating autonomy software, advanced digital systems, and communications compatible with existing military platforms.
The initiative is part of the UK’s strategy to strengthen the defense industry and ensure technological sovereignty in critical areas such as the design and operation of autonomous systems. The government intends to limit participation to companies with a presence in the UK, emphasizing that the current focus is on research and development, with no plans for large-scale production at this stage.
A major demonstration of capabilities is planned for 2027, marking the transition to flight testing.
